There is a disconnect among University of Iowa Staff related to campus and work unit communication efforts and staff perception of that effort:


  • When surveyed staff consistently cite a lack of being kept in the loop regarding campus information relating to construction, parking, compensation, events, and other employment expectations. Conversely, it is known that many staff do not read mass emails or newsletters, blogs, or other similar electronic media.
  • From the University of Iowa perspective communication formats are diverse and plentiful. They come in the form of electronic broadcasts sent to diverse groups around the campus. There are also campus posters placed in high traffic areas on the health care and academic facilities as well as some limited campus mailings.

The question raised is how to better communicate across groups (targeted communication) and across the campus as a whole (mass communications).

Are there better ways to communication with staff which will be less likely to be overlooked or discarded?
