A concern was expressed that the UI continues to hold classes when it is extremely cold (below zero degrees Fahrenheit). Buses are crowded to and from campus and frostbite is possible.

The Safety on Campus Subcommittee consulted with the Office of Student Life, UI Public Safety, Parking & Transportation, and Facilities Management. Increasing bus routes during inclement weather may not be practical due to road conditions and difficulty getting drivers in and running routes. UI officials do walk the campus before decisions are made regarding class cancellation (offices listed above are consulted). While frostbite is of course possible for those unprepared for severe cold, students with coats, hats, gloves and scarves are generally able to meet the weather challenges. Severe weather announcements are made through various media.
